Vic heard another larger explosion, from deeper, followed by a rolling grumble. She didn’t know what it was but knew it wasn’t good and began to climb faster. When she reached the top she didn’t slow but jumped up, grabbed the bag and pulled the loop of the climbing rope over the boulder and began to run up the slope dragging the rope behind. She was two hundred meters up the slope when another explosion made her stop and she almost lost her balance. Then came the big one. Suddenly Vic couldn’t hear anything and she had to fight to stand and she saw the ground rolling toward her and thought of her mother waving a table cloth across the table. It felt like the earth lifted beneath her and tilted away from the canyon. Then in an instant it reversed and she had the sickening sensation of a sudden fall and as hot dust engulfed her, she was knocked down and lost consciousness.
